Dorrigo is the “fresh air” part of our tours, known for its Rainforest
Situation
Here we are, in Dorrigo! And you’ll love it. This is a small village situated at 580 kilometres in the North from Sydney. It is parts of the Bellingen’s county and counts around 1 000 inhabitants. Its name comes from an aboriginal word which is “Dundurrigo”, which represents a kind of Eucalyptus that we can find in this area. Dorrigo is located at 730 meters above sea level. Yes, we are in the mountains.
This a totally different landscape from the beginning of the tour as we are surrounded by mountains. We can breath the fresh air and feel free. You can see mountains for miles! As we are up, the air is getting chilly but really pleasant.
Attractions/What to do
In the Dorrigo area, there are 2 popular attractions. The first one is the “Dangar Falls”. You can have an upper view on it by the carpark and take photos in front of it to bring souvenirs. Or, you can go down to feel closer to the falls. It is only 10 minutes walk from the carpark and it’s worth it to go down because from here, you’ll have a different view on the falls and if you feel it, you can swim in the water. You can then reach the falls. Not too close, obviously.
The second attraction is the Dorrigo Rainforest, in which you can walk and discover the lush flora and the wild fauna. We call it a Rainforest because of its density and rich biodiversity. But also because it is situated in a high annual rainfall area, where does the humidity comes from. First, you can go to the skywalk to have an overview on the rainforest and the mountains. Next, it’s time to go in the Rainforest. During your walk, you will discover so many noises that you’ve never heard before. For example, you’ll hear the “Whipbird”, which do such a special noise! We couldn’t even reproduce it. The rainforest is immersed in silence and you just hear the sounds of your footsteps and those of the fauna and flora.
Concerning the flora, there are so much things to discover here. You’re guide will probably tell you about the “Mother trees” or about stories that you don’t know yet. And your eyes will be everywhere. You’ll see the magic of nature, and it’s incredible.
To sleep
To sleep at night, we booked you the most traditional accommodation ever. A pub! It is called the “Heritage Hotel Motel” and that’s why our tours are different from the other ones. Here, you’ll discover the real Aussie style. The rooms are bigger than you imagine and very comfy. At the beginning, it could be a little bit creepy, but it’s really not, I swear. Each room have access to the huge balcony so you can meet your travel mates easily.
To eat
To have your dinner, you can directly order at the pub, downstairs. Be careful, some of the portions are big, but the food is qualitative so it doesn’t matter.
