Australia East Coast Tours – Byron Bay
Hello travellers,
On this blog you’ll read about the experience happening on day 5 of the following tours: 14 day Sydney to Cairns, 8 day Sydney to Brisbane, and 17 day Sydney to Cairns. Written by Calumn Hockey
As soon as the word Byron Bay leaves my mouth, everyone just falls in love…not with me but Byron Bay!
Byron Bay is one of those places where pretty much everything goes and you can do as your heart desires. Having visited Byron Bay a hundred or so times, you’ve really gotta go to the secret spots to truly understand the values of this place.
But before you head off on an adventure, Byron Bay Harvest will provide you with a classic Australian barbeque where everything is from the farm to plate which means that a smaller carbon footprint is created and trust me, if you grow your own it will taste so much better!
I always have a bit of a debate with myself and that’s choosing between chilling out a local restaurant with a local brew or getting outdoors and going for a surf.
For me the perfect day in Byron Bay looks a bit like this:
0630am – Sunrise from the most easterly point in Australia, Cape Byron. After sunrise from the Byron Bay Lighthouse, walk back into town via the Clarks Beach and Wategos Beach.
0830am – After freshening up back at the hotel, head down to the Thursday Farmers Markets located on the Byron Bay Sports Field for everything locally produced. You simply cannot beat a local coffee brew roasted and grinded in Byron accompanied by a flakey croissant or a home-grown banana and mango!
1000am – Once I get fueled up its straight to Wategos Beach which is one of Byron’s most famous places to chill out laden with Pandanus Palms, gold sand, pristine rocks pools and generally a good wave all day round.
1pm – after a good session at the beach, salt in the hair it’s time to head back into town for lunch! Byron Bay has no shortage of cafes and restaurants but there are a few that are just better than the rest. Personally, I cannot leave Byron without having a slice or two of pizza from Slice Pizzeria but if you are looking for a place to sit back with a cold brew or glass of wine, The Beach Hotel is just awesome and offers the best views of Main Beach.
3pm – It’s already been a long day and I cannot go without a quick nap so it’s lights out for 30 minutes to recharge the batteries and get ready for what the rest of the day holds. For a quick pick me up, I head to my favourite coffee place in Byron called Barefoot Brew Room on Lateen Lane which is super close to the accommodation followed by a quick walk down to the beach which is only 5 minutes away!
5pm – As the day moves on, I always check the surf that one more time to see if it’s worth grabbing a surf board and heading out for a turn or two. The rest of my afternoon leading into sunset is generally spent frolicking around Clarkes Beach listening to buskers who tend to bring in a big crowd who are all down for a dance.
730pm – With the sun setting, there’s a few places that you just need to witness the sun passing over Wollombi (Mount Warning) and that’s from Cape Byron Lighthouse or simply heading down to Clarkes Beach to watch a collision of salty mist and rays of golden light mix together.
830pm – Nights in Byron Bay are huge and there are no shortage of places to eat your heart out, enjoy a cocktail even sample one or two of Byron Bays famous beers. The top three places are The Beach, The Northern and The Rails which are all within 500 metres of one another. A personal favourite of mine is Miss Margaritas located on Jonson Street.
