Tasmania experiences four distinct seasons, each with its own charm. The warmest months are December through March, with autumn offering calm, sunny days. Winter runs from May to August, and the climate can vary widely due to Tasmania’s proximity to the Southern Ocean.
Summer temperatures range from 17 to 23°C, while winter highs are between 3 and 11°C. Rainfall is diverse: Hobart, with 626mm annually, is Australia’s second-driest capital, while the west coast receives up to 2400mm, sustaining its rainforests.
Weather can change suddenly, especially when bushwalking, so always carry extra warm and waterproof clothing. While 23°C in summer may not seem hot, the dry heat and strong sun make sunscreen and a hat essential.
Tasmania has four distinct seasons, and for many visitors, the seasonal experiences are a big draw.
Winter, or the “Off Season,” is perfect for cozying up by a log fire with a glass of pinot noir, biking through the cool air, storm-watching on the beach, or exploring alpine national parks. Winter days are often bright and crisp, with snow-capped mountains glistening in the sunshine. It’s also the time for truffle hunting, enjoying peak oysters and scallops, and sipping Tasmania’s finest whisky (in our opinion).
Spring brings longer, warmer days with cooler nights, perfect for enjoying wildlife breeding, waratah flowers, and the vibrant gardens of historic houses and flower farms.
Summer is all about long days and even longer beaches. The lavender fields bloom, and there’s a full calendar of festivals. It’s the busiest season, so make sure to book car rentals and accommodations early.
Autumn offers the best conditions for touring and hiking, with calm, sunny days and crisp evenings. Don’t miss the stunning transformation of the fagus trees, which turn the hillsides gold and russet.
Yes they are! Head to a wildlife park to get a close look at the Tasmanian devil. These nocturnal creatures are hard to spot in the wild, but you might hear their feeding frenzy from quite a distance
We limit our trips to 16 people so you have more contact with the guide and can get in amongst the action quicker. Experience tells us this is the sweet spot for a tour group – big enough to make friends and create a travel community, but small enough to be boutique in nature!
